Research

Grip Age methodology, hang vs dynamometer convergence, and the open performance registry.

Mission

The WDHC Research Department runs the world's largest open registry pairing dead hang endurance with optional dynamometer grip strength. Our goal mirrors longevity research: estimate biological grip age from performance · with or without a dynamometer · and improve that estimate as the dataset grows.

Every verified submission contributes to calibration. Paired hang + dynamometer readings are especially valuable: they tell us when endurance and max grip agree, and when they diverge (a research signal, not noise).

Three Grip Age Readings (v1.9)

Each athlete with a dynamometer on file has three distinct scores. Understanding the gap between them is core WDHC research.

1 · Hang-Estimated

Hang time only. Population-anchored expected hang by age, sex, body size, and training. Label: Estimated.

2 · Dynamo Bio

Dynamometer only. NHANES-style inverse lookup: what population age has your median grip? Training does not adjust this path.

3 · Measured Blend

Official score when dynamometer present: 72% Dynamo Bio + 28% hang modifier (capped). Label: Measured.

Convergence hypothesis: as paired submissions grow, Hang-Estimated coefficients will be re-fit to predict Dynamo Bio · shrinking the gap for typical athletes while preserving divergence flags for endurance vs strength specialists.

Scenario Comparison

Representative profiles computed with Grip Age™ v1.9 (June 2026 calibration). Gap = Hang-Estimated minus Dynamo Bio.

Profile Hang-Est. Dynamo Bio Measured Gap
Elite hang + strong dyno (4:42 / 128 lb)212324-2
Population median (52s / 111 lb)343535-1
Average hang + strong dyno (2:00 / 128 lb)302325+7
Great hang, weak dynamo (3:00 / 85 lb)308067-50
Poor hang, strong dynamo (1:00 / 140 lb)411824+23
Endurance specialist (4:00 / 100 lb)275446-27
Strength specialist (45s / 135 lb)362024+16
55yo below average (45s / 95 lb)546360-9

Takeaway: When hang endurance and max grip tell the same story, Hang-Estimated and Dynamo Bio align within ~1 to 7 years. Large gaps identify phenotype splits worth studying · not formula failure.

Research Roadmap

Phase 1 · Registry (now)

Collect paired hang + dynamometer + demographics on every optional submit. Publish aggregate calibration notes here.

Phase 2 · Convergence model

Re-fit hang-only coefficients against Dynamo Bio ground truth. Target: median |gap| < 5 years for general population profiles.

Phase 3 · Phenotype taxonomy

Classify endurance-biased vs strength-biased athletes. Publish normative tables by age, sex, and training tier.

Contribute

Add your dynamometer reading on submit · even once. It is optional for leaderboard rank but critical for research accuracy.
