What Is Grip Age™?

Grip Age translates your dead hang time into a population-anchored score, how your grip endurance compares to adults your age and sex. A lower Grip Age means your hang outperforms typical expectations for your chronological age. A higher Grip Age means there is room to climb the tiers.

WDHC uses Grip Age v1.9 on the public site. Every verified submission receives a Grip Age analysis in your confirmation email. The Athlete Portal calculator uses the same formula family.

How It Works

We start with your chronological age and sex, then compare your hang against population-anchored expectations. Longer hangs pull your Grip Age younger; shorter hangs pull it older relative to the field.

Hang-only: expected hang from age/sex priors → performance ratio → Grip Age offset
With dynamometer: 72% NHANES dynamo bio age + 28% hang modifier (capped)

Hang-only scores use conservative general-population priors until the WDHC registry matures. Optional dynamometer readings sharpen the estimate when you provide them.

Grip Age is a training benchmark, not a judgment. Leaderboard rank is always hang time. In your Athlete Portal settings you can hide Grip Age from the public board anytime while keeping it visible in your private dashboard.

Performance Tiers

Tiers are based on verified active hang duration. They are separate from Grip Age but often move together as you improve.

How to measure your grip strength

Use a hand dynamometer (squeeze gauge) on your dominant hand. Stand relaxed, arm at your side, elbow bent about 90°. Squeeze as hard as you can for 3 to 5 seconds. Take your best of three attempts, in pounds or kilograms.

Add your reading on submit or in your Athlete Portal profile. It is never required, but it can refine your Grip Age when hang data alone is ambiguous.

Before You Film

  • Warm up lightly. Shoulder circles and one or two short hangs, not a full fatigue session before the real attempt.
  • Chalk, not tack. Block or liquid chalk is fine. No rosin, pine tar, or sticky grip aids.
  • Know your bar. Standard fixed pull-up bar, ~1.25" (32 mm). Factory powder coat or light knurling is fine. No tape, foam, or tacky coatings on the gripping surface.
  • Overhand only. Pronated grip, thumbs around or thumbless. No mixed or underhand grips.

Camera Setup

  • Full body in frame. Hands on bar through feet, entire body visible for the whole clip.
  • Side or 45° angle. Reviewers need to see elbow extension and that feet stay off the ground.
  • Visible timer. On-screen timer or a clock in frame helps verification. State your time on the form too.
  • Public or unlisted link. YouTube, Drive, Reddit, Instagram, or TikTok, reviewers must be able to open it without a login wall.

During the Hang

WDHC verified ✓

Contender and below: standard bar on a normal rig is enough. For Pro, Elite, Legend, and Freak tiers you also need:

  • Caliper shot. Bar diameter measured on camera (~1.25 in / 32 mm).
  • Bar surface close-up. Prove no tape, foam, or tacky coatings. Factory powder coat and light knurling are OK.
  • Same unedited clip. Measurement and hang in one continuous video.

Common Rejections

  • Edited or spliced footage
  • Body partially out of frame
  • Bent elbows, one-handed hangs, or feet touching ground early
  • Straps, gloves, or tacky grip aids
  • Private video links reviewers cannot open
  • Submitted time far off from verified duration

Climber FAQ

How do I submit from the gym or home?

Do I need a dynamometer?

No. Leaderboard rank is always hang time. A grip-strength reading only sharpens your Grip Age™ when you choose to add one.

What counts for monthly challenges?

Every approved hang in the challenge window counts automatically - no separate form. Each month runs Longest Hang of the Month plus a rotating second challenge (see Challenges).

WDHC vs Rogue / Guinness

WDHC is building a year-round league, not a one-week brand popup or a single record attempt.

Rogue = event · Guinness = record · WDHC = sport
